Backpacks for the Homeless
We are very proud of Wentworth Year 3 pupil Jacob, who set about helping the homeless in September, appealing for donations after seeing many people homeless on the streets.
Nearly three months down the line through various appeals, yard sales and media appearances, Jacob gathered together enough donations to fill a staggering 138 backpacks to give to the homeless.
On Saturday, Jacob set up a stall at Tesco Extra in Maldon, where he approached customers to ask for food donations.
After eight hours, he had received enough food to fill eight shopping trolleys.
On Sunday, at his home, Jacob spent the day packing all of his backpacks, which took up his entire garden.
Each backpack contains a jumper, trousers, underwear, thermals, wash kit, wind up torch, note book, pen, drinks flask, various food and drink plus a sleeping bag.
There are 96 backpacks for men and 42 for women. Originally, Jacob only wanted to fill ten packs.
This week he will be distributing them to various day centers and night shelters in Essex as well as donating 100 coats, 50 pairs of shoes, four trolley loads of food and drink, five sacks of warm clothes and three boxes of toiletries, plus a cash donation from money raised via his fundraising page.
